چکیده

T HE STUDY of iron absorption in man is hampered by the fact that the amount of iron which is retained in the intestinal mucosa and in the liver during the absorptive process is not known. Technics using whole body counters and stool collections give little or no information about the internal distribution of absorbed iron, except by use of iron52 and the Anger positron camera.’ A technic which permits simultaneous sampling of portal and systemic venous blood would appear to be useful in the study of transport of iron across the intestinal mucosa and its passage through the liver. Using Bonnet’s technic,2 iron absorption was studied in six patients undergoing umbilical vein catheterization for diagnostic purposes. The preliminary results have been published.3 The data on iron absorption and utilization were compared with those obtained previously in a group of normal men and women.4’

Exploitation of bile acid transport systems in prodrug design.

The enterohepatic circulation of bile acids is one of the most efficient recycling routes in the human body. It is a complex process involving numerous transport proteins, which serve to transport bile acids from the small intestine into portal circulation, from the portal circulation into the hepatocyte, from the hepatocyte into the bile, and from the gall bladder to the small intestine. The t...

Is the calcium transporter a potential candidate for heme transport?

Heme is of significant importance in iron nutrition and in systemic iron metabolism. The crux of the matter is that while much is known about non-heme metabolism, the vectorial import of exogenous porphyrin macromolecules into the enterocyte and possibly into blood circulation is still speculative. The inhibitory effect of calcium on heme iron absorption has been previously reported in the lite...

Influence of atmospheric circulation patterns on dust transport during Harmattan Period in West Africa

This study has used TOMS AI as well as the reanalysis dataset of thirty-four years (1979-2012) to investigate the influence of atmospheric circulation on dust transport during the Harmattan period in West Africa, using Aerosol Index (AI) data, obtained from various satellite sensors. Changes in Inter-Tropical Discontinuity (ITD), Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the Gulf of Guinea, and North ...

Hepatic iron deposition in humans. I. First-pass hepatic deposition of intestinally absorbed iron in patients with low plasma latent iron-binding capacity.

capacity was saturated by an acute intravenous infusion of iron, deposited a large fraction of intestinally absorbed iron in the liver during the first pass of portal venous blood through this organ.1 Subsequently, Wheby and Umpiere demonstrated similar results in normal human subjects given sufficient iron to acutely saturate their plasma iron-binding capacity.2 Our results in patients with sp...

Involvement of constitutive nitric oxide synthase in the portal-systemic collaterals of portal hypertensive rats.

BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown that endothelial nitric oxide (NO) is involved in modulating the vascular response to vasoconstrictors in portal-systemic collaterals of portal hypertensive rats. This study investigated which isoform of NO synthase is involved in the collateral circulation of portal hypertensive rats. METHODS The relaxation response to acetylcholine (10(-8) M, 10(-7) M an...
